The word doula comes from an ancient Greek word and means person of service. Death doulas offer non-medical, holistic care and support to a dying person (and possibly their family) before, during, or after death. Doulas come to this work from a variety of backgrounds, and as such, focus their work in different areas.

Hospice care provides medical and comfort care, and a death doula provides non-medical holistic care and support.

You do not have to be actively dying or ill to have conversations about death or to work with a death doula.
Death is a part of life, and if you choose, you can show up to it in that way!
